Black Friday Shoppers Are Not Villains

We’ve all seen it on the internet, in television and probably on the radio. Black Friday shoppers are made to look like selfish idiots. I just want to take a moment though to explain why Black Friday shoppers are not villains.

1. They boost the economy

Even though stores are cutting prices, the entire point of black friday is to help retailers move from “in the red” to “in the black” so they don’t go “in the hole” by the end of the year. We all know that several retailers have already made massive profits in the year, but look at it this way: they are providing more people with more jobs this year. Yes, they may be making a minimum wage, but they are earning a portion of the profits and for some people they really need that money. In addition, with the money people save by shopping Black Friday deals, they can use it elsewhere to boost the economy.

2. They have a good time

With exception to Black Friday violence, for the most part I believe people really are enjoying themselves. Believe it or not, some people get a thrill out of sleeping in a tent outside of a store for a few days. They can tell a great story and have the opportunity to share an experience.

3. They are supporting small businesses

Everyone puts a lot of focus on the major corporations benefiting from Black Friday, but small businesses do as well. For example, as a small business owner myself, I am able to finish off the year by promoting deals on my blog. I enjoy finding deals and posting them for my readers. People will even send me personal requests and I look into them. So while the deals I am posting are typically from large retailers, people purchasing using the links on my blog are supporting my small business.

4. They aren’t necessarily away from their family on Thanksgiving Day

Black Friday isn’t just one day now. It’s almost an entire month. And now it’s online. Since I myself post deals for Black Friday and I also head out to the stores on Thanksgiving night and the next day, I can tell you that I personally have noticed that the deals online are just as good if not better. So if you don’t like the idea of sleeping overnight outside of a store, just roll out of bed and visit the website of your favorite blogger and you can get the same deals in your pajamas.

5. They are frugal

A lot of the people I have talked to that get excited about Black Friday deals are frugal. They are good stewards of their money and prefer to get the best deals at the best time of year. They often are aware of which items have a lower price at this time of year and they are simply shopping to take advantage of the prices rather than participating in the hype.

So next time you hear someone talking about being a Black Friday shopping, don’t stereotype! It’s not all hype!

Why I Wear All Black, All the Time

In the words of Yohji Yamamoto, “Black is modest and arrogant at the same time. Black is lazy and easy — but mysterious. But above all black says this: “I don’t bother you — don’t bother me.””

Not long after I moved to New York three years ago, a young gentleman stopped me on the platform at the Wall Street stop on the 5 train. “Miss,” he said, timidly. “Could you please tell me where the nearest Goth club is?” I looked up, quizzically, from beneath my mop of unruly blonde hair. I hesitated before bursting into laughter. He was serious. Perplexed as I assured him I was not a Goth, he gave me and my patent black Doc Marten’s (OK, OK I get it…) the once-over before retreating. I stepped onto the train and headed to my internship writing for a fashion magazine. He stood there, bemused.

On any given day, I can be found swathed in head-to-toe black. It’s sharp, it’s chic and it’s powerful. The only color I consistently wear is red, on my lips (MAC Lady Danger, to be precise). I feel entirely out of place in bright colors, verging on excess; like a lightbulb attracting every gnat in town. Black, on the other hand, allows one to be fully absorbed into anonymity, especially while living in one of the largest, most extroverted cities in the world. Defined as “the absence of light,” black allows me to find equilibrium paired with my bright disposition and bleached white hair, like Yin and Yang.

Over the years, my penchant for the color back has dubbed me all the nicknames: Elvira, Wednesday, Morticia, Casper, Rosemary Cullen, Sarah Sanderson (my abnormally fair skin admittedly does nothing to help my case here). I was recruited to play a small role in True Blood, and have been referred to as “Little Stevie [Nicks]” (my muse, and arguably the most flattering of the aforementioned). But unlike Nicks, who ditched her all-black ensembles for two years to combat those rumors of witchcraft, I won’t be abandoning my monochromatic uniform anytime soon, no matter how many brooms I am accused of riding through the skies of Manhattan.

I am completely addicted to black. Something about it, for me, is so positively delicious. Certain tastemakers will eschew my choice to wear a head-to-toe black look, frown upon it as being boring, unoriginal, lazy. To each their own, I say. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Style is about self-expression, is it not?

I was not always this way, though, as I was raised in a somewhat waspy family. But growing up Roman Catholic, I was always very fascinated by the black garments worn by the priests and nuns. My studies in Italy as a teen quickly replaced my rainbow of Lacoste polo shirts, seersucker shorts and ribbon belts with black turtlenecks, black capes and fine leather goods in — you guessed it — black. I was trying to avoid having my cover as a foreigner immediately blown, so I quickly learned to dress the part. It worked — nobody crossed me. (Presumably out of sheer terror that I would stomp my last-season Prada shoes on them. Fair enough.) It was at this time in my life that I fully realized the magnitude of one’s sense of dress; how it can speak louder than words, or not say anything at all.

Black, somehow, allows me to do both at once. As an animated, optimistic, dry-humored person who is simultaneously and very quickly exhausted from overstimulation, I get my energy from being alone and greatly enjoy solitude. I despise conflict; I avoid it and when possible, I run from it. I always have. More often than not, I will let personal calls ring through to voicemail unless it’s a family member or very close friend. And while I can certainly be verbally articulate, I would much prefer to express myself through writing, art, and dress. I spend the vast majority of every day inside my own head: thinking, ruminating, creating, analyzing. I am a complete introvert.

I long for meaningful conversations with those to whom I am closest. It’s not that I am not social; just selectively so. I adore people, though I have considerably more alliances than friends. I trust precious few. I crave authenticity in my interactions and while I’m outgoing, I much prefer listening to talking. I like to play my cards thoughtfully. Black is a subconscious means for me to put people off, in a way, to stay somewhat hidden, to hold on to secrets, to preserve the unknown. Call me old-fashioned, but I believe there is no sexier quality than to uphold an air of mystery, both in terms of self-disclosure and in terms of dress. Never tell all; never show all. It keeps people guessing.

Black has become my armor, because nobody interrupts a woman for directions or small talk (except for Wall Street platform guy) that appears to be more likely to cast a spell with her black umbrella than discuss a forecast for lightning.

We know, we know — there are tons of great deals happening on Black Friday and Cyber Monday — but we don’t think we can wait that long to buy all the amazing items we saw on our favorite stars this week.

Bronze is the New Black: Jennifer Lawrence, Ashley Olsen, and Miranda Kerr Shine in Metallic Eyeliner

Jennifer Lawrence

Somewhere between the supernatural appeal of nude shadow and the high-impact definition of a feline flick lies the warm allure of bronze eyeliner. Spotted in New York City over the weekend, Ashley Olsen and Miranda Kerr attended the Louis Vuitton Celebrating Monogram party with soft rimmings of light-catching metallic brown that looked as healthy as their dewy skin and flesh-toned lips. Over in London, Jennifer Lawrence highlighted her lids with a layer of burnished pigment for a daytime smoky eye that felt just right for a morning photo call. Here, three shining examples of why bronze is the new black.

Date Night: A Little Black Dress Is the Best Revenge

Photo: Everett Collection

How does it always seem to happen that just as you’re in the post-break-up clear, the ex will rear his pesky head? Most likely via text, of all things, asking to meet for coffee, of all beverages? And even though your brain is telling you that this is a horrible idea, you know you’ll meet. Because how better to show off how you are without him? First step: Dressing well is the best revenge. “It’s a touchy subject—but you can consider the post-break-up meeting as closure. Also, if he was a jerk—then it is a way to show that you are doing amazingly,” says Vogue.com Market Editor Chelsea Zalopany. “Nonetheless, the whole idea around the outfit—and yourself—should be ‘control.’ ”

First step? Change coffee to drinks. “You can’t bring your sartorial A-game during coffee,” says Zalopany. “Say you have plans after, but you can meet for a drink first. Meeting for drinks is like a first date; you have a quick getaway if things go sour.” As for the look, it should reflect your current state of mind: decisive and direct. Choose something form-fitting that evokes self-assurance. “Think clean, concise, and shows off your assets,” says Zalopany. “That Monica Bellucci vibe of seduction mixed with an Emily Thorne–of-Revenge confidence.” For the extras? Keep everything basic and black. “Think assassin chic in Kill Bill—she has the ultimate looks-could-kill appeal in a fitted leather jacket,” says Zalopany. “And don’t be afraid of heels—they will make your posture better, which is a natural confidence boost.” Just make sure you can actually walk in them: Tripping, stumbling, and slouching is not a position of strength. You’re not trying, you just always look this great now.

Armed and ready? The last takeaway to revenge dressing: Enjoy it. And pro tip: Do try to remember that there’s a reason you broke up in the first place.

The One Shade Of Black Paint That Always Looks Good (VIDEO)

Few color combinations are as modern, elegant and timeless as black-and-white — when it’s done right, that is. A big part of achieving a flawless black-and-white aesthetic is picking the right shades. Paint retailers boast an array of blacks (from onyx to ebony to midnight) and whites (from snow to linen to ivory), but which ones really create the best look?

Will Taylor, an interior design expert and author, tells the web series #OWNSHOW that when it comes to black, he goes for a softer shade.

“I always try and go for a chalkboard black,” Taylor says.

This particular black is soft enough to be versatile while still looking dramatic — and it’s easier to work with than glossier options. “It usually can be brought into many different spaces,” Taylor says. “That matte finish means that it will seamlessly introduce to a scheme, whereas if you go for something gloss, it’s going to be much more in-your-face.”

black and white dining room

Paying close attention to the paint’s finish is one of Taylor’s biggest tips for anyone shopping for a shade of black.

“Just like lighter shades, dark shades also show knocks and bruises and those kinds of things,” he explains. “When it comes to chalkboard paint, it has this matte finish that actually hides any scratches and fingerprint marks.”

Bonus tip: To add an element of whimsy, use special chalkboard paint that allows people to write on it. Taylor says it’s a great option for kids’ rooms, especially. “I’ve seen great examples by people who have actually painted a kid’s bedroom door in chalkboard black paint, which produces this really statement piece on the landing, but then when you go into the bedroom, the children can write all over it in chalk,” he says. “It’s really fun.”

black chalkboard pain in kitchen

As for white, Taylor admits that it often comes down to individual taste, but shares a few tips to help guide those in the market for their ideal shade.

“Personally, I don’t like to go for a stark, bright white because it can feel very clinical,” he says. “So try and pick a white with a little more warmth in it — perhaps an oatmeal or a stony white. It’s just got a little more depth and texture to it.”

black and white dining room

As with black, focus on the finish. “A matte finish will really help in keeping that white feel… fresh and not clinical,” Taylor says.

But is there ever a good time to use that crisp, bright white? Absolutely, Taylor says, but you don’t have to buy a single gallon of paint to do it.

“Pure white works really well in a modern and contemporary space when it comes to introducing furniture,” he says. “So, you might want to go for a lacquered, high-gloss white desk in a contemporary office or perhaps you might want to bring in lacquered white units in a contemporary kitchen.”

Are you a renter? Try these simple ways to add unexpected pops of color in your space without painting any walls.

Macy’s To Kick Off Black Friday Earlier Than Ever

The war on Thanksgiving has officially begun.

Macy’s confirmed to The Huffington Post Tuesday that it will open stores to Black Friday shoppers at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving day — two hours earlier than it opened last year.

In doing so, Macy’s became the first major retailer in 2014 to wage war on Thanksgiving — a day people traditionally spend with family and friends. In recent years, the so-called “Black Friday creep” has caused more and more low-wage workers to miss out on their own turkey dinners so they can staff the kickoff of the year’s busiest shopping season.

Last year, dozens of retailers, desperate to get the most out of the holiday shopping season, opened their doors earlier than ever. Walmart kicked off its Black Friday deals at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving. Target opened at 8 o’clock that evening.

A Macy’s spokesperson told HuffPost in an email that most of this year’s Thanksgiving shifts have already been filled voluntarily, and that workers who take opening shifts on the holiday will be compensated with “incentive pay.” CNBC reports that workers will be paid time and a half for shifts that begin on Thanksgiving.

The company has already announced that it plans to hire 86,000 additional workers to staff the holiday season.

Key And Peele Dish On Obama’s Black Handshake

Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele dropped by HuffPost Live on Friday, and we couldn’t let them go without some discussion of Barack Obama.

The president — who has provided a wealth of material for the comedy duo — was the subject of a recent “Key & Peele” sketch examining the difference between the way Obama greets white and black visitors. The idea stemmed from what Key and Peele have actually seen themselves, they told HuffPost Live’s Ricky Camilleri on Friday.

“We witnessed that happen when we met him,” Key said of Obama’s greetings.

Key and Peele also have ideas for what Obama might do after he leaves the Oval Office, and it includes an arena tour.

How to Be a Babe Without Trying: Taking Cues from Diana Ross’s Damp Hair and Black Eyeliner

Diana Ross

If the recent runway shows from New York to Paris weren’t enough to convince you that slick, still-damp hair is an entirely appropriate Saturday-night beauty statement, you need only to look at Diana Ross on the cover of her 1980 album, Diana. Her signature more-is-more cloud of curls has been replaced with a cool, freshly washed bob that reveals the high-gloss shine of a hydrating hair oil. On her face, the former Supremes front woman (and the girl group’s makeup artist and hairstylist) eschewed her high-wattage glamour for the flattering nonchalance of slept-in eyeliner and softly shaded cheekbones. It’s a timeless look that’s just as well suited for a night out in a lingerie-inspired black slipdress as it is for a white T-shirt and jeans. Simply forgo the blowdryer and get lost in your primping sound track—“I’m Coming Out” would be an appropriate choice.

‘Orange Is The New Black’ Cast Hangs Out With La Roux Because They’re, Well, ‘Bulletproof’

Is ginger the new black? It appears to be, according to La Roux and the cast of “Orange Is the New Black.”

Laura Prepon, along with Emma Myles (a.k.a. Leanne Taylor) and Kimiko Glenn (a.k.a. Brook Soso), saw La Roux perform at Terminal 5 in New York City on Saturday night and then hung out with the British pop singer backstage. The ladies of Litchfield are known to hang out together outside of the prison walls. On Friday night, Lea DeLaria was in the West Village with Lori Petty, who’s reportedly returning for Season 3, and there was also that time the cast rode the NYC subway together and went out to a local bar.

La Roux’s Elly Jackson posted a photo of herself and bandmates with Prepon, Myles and Glenn with the hashtag “ginger is the new black.” Can we hope for a surprise cameo next season?

Alexander McQueen’s Black Lacquer Face Masks: The Look of the Day in Paris

Alexander McQueen spring 2015 backstage

A few weeks back, in the middle of New York Fashion Week, makeup artist Pat McGrath got the directive for tonight’s Alexander McQueen show in Paris. “Sarah [Burton] was talking about wanting something strong and lacquered on the face,” said McGrath backstage, who often begins discussing options with the designer well in advance. Specifically, Burton had mentioned a mask that the makeup artist had created for model Julia Nobis in a recent issue of Italian Vogue as a loose starting point. So McGrath set to work designing three differently shaped coverings for the face out of lightweight plastic, then lacquering them to give them a high-gloss sheen. She brought around 70 of them to the designer’s fittings this week in Paris, where they were eventually narrowed down to a final 35 pieces according to each model’s runway look. Packed in open crates and separated by thin layers of cloth, they were waiting near McGrath’s makeup station—but first, Burton’s models had to be prepped. “We wanted these exquisite faces to be coming through from behind the masks,” said McGrath, who blended a futuristic mix of shimmering powders on the lids and refined the skin using foundation. Once that was done, she and her team used double-stick tape and adhesive to attach them to the face for an effect that was “quite powerful.” Their high-shine surfaces echoed the early reflective quality that Guido Palau was giving to his square-ish Japan-inspired buns using bottles of Redken Hardwear Gel and Forceful 23 hairspray. “We’re folding the hair, almost like a pastry, using a thin piece of cardboard, and then pinning it into place,” he explained of the look, which combined elements of “Sumo, Japan, manga, and animé” into one strangely beautiful origami-like shape. “At McQueen,” said Palau of the startling final effect, “the past and the future always go hand in hand.”

‘Black-ish’: Horrible Parody of Black Family Life

I cringed when I saw the name and promos for Black-ish. But, I tried to reserve judgment until I saw it. And sure enough, its premise and the actual show is as offensive as its name.

First, the idea that there is only one essential way of being “black” is incredibly problematic. The sad thing is that they think of themselves and bill themselves as a modern day Cosby Show.

The amazing thing that shows like the Cosby Show and A Different World was that they showed the incredible diversity of African Americans. They showed our humanity and how just like every other group of human beings, we are influenced in our personal development by not only our racial identifiers, but also by our socio-economic, educational, geographic, religious and familial realities. That’s how you got diverse characters like Whitley, Duane, Kimberly Reece, Freddie Brooks, Lena James and sidekick, Ron – all totally different, all undeniably black.

What Black-ish misses and what those shows embraced, is that one of the primary things that unite black people is this country is that regardless of socio-economic status, skin complexion and other life choices, black folks in America have a shared history and current reality of struggling against stereotypes, institutional and legislative racism, and continued barriers precisely because we continue to be judged by the color of our skin, more than by the content of our character and the uniqueness of our journey.

Black-ish serves to validate the stereotypes that “keeping it real” means that all black people play the same sports, live in one type of neighborhood or that “fried, fried chicken” is a “black thing,” rather than perhaps a southern thing. It questions whether the bi-racial mother is “really black” at all. Who gets to decide that?

The sad thing is that the producers, writers and actors seem to miss is that it is not fried chicken or playing basketball that defines who 10 million diverse black people are. If there is an essential black culture, it must involve knowing the history and struggle, triumphs and major milestones of these people you seek to portray.

Black children not knowing the implications and historical relevance of President Obama’s election is not funny. Too many people marched, fought, bled, died, legislated, were beaten, brutalized for any American not to understand the importance of his election. Perhaps the problem is not where this imaginary family lives, but that these imaginary black parents have not taken the time to discuss the important and real challenges and victories of African American life today.

The show ends with what is supposed to be a heartwarming, comic ending of the black son having a “bro mitzvah,” where the whole black family dresses up in Run DMC ’80s rapper gear and they break dance and take pictures indicating that that is the black version of a bar mitzvah.

The son says he is happy to convert to Judaism and forsake his own religion (whatever that is), in order to have a bar mitzvah party. There is a subsequent scene where they mock the idea of an African rites of passage.

The juxtaposition of the pride taken in Jewish culture with the complete lack of context for the historical place of true African rites of passage programs that are far richer than the joke Black-ish makes them out to be or the historical place of the black church which has produced voices such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is striking. When the son is asked if he would give up his religion and convert for a bar mitvah party, he eagerly replies yes. This diminishes and undermines both the important religious and cultural significance of the Jewish experience and the historical and cultural experience of African Americans in this country while mocking African heritage and pride, all in one fell swoop.

Sadly, these uniformed writers, create a father character whose deep concern about his children understanding their black heritage centers on things like his son playing basketball, while having a complete lack of focus on historical and cultural markers that make many African Americans proud of the common heritage we share. There is no sophisticated analysis or understanding of how the paradigm set up by this show is the exact stereotype many of us are fighting against.

The father rails against his son playing field hockey because it is thought to be a white sport and he doesn’t want his son to become a “white boy.” Well, before Arthur Ashe and the Williams sisters, tennis was thought to be a “white” sport. Before Tiger Woods, golf was just seen as a “white” sport. And I could go on. The history of black people in America is making the point that, “We, too, sing America,” and we are capable of playing any sport and participating in any field we want – just like every other person.

I once heard a Chicago preacher named Sean McMillan, say in his sermon that, “Every black mother and father is a freedom fighter, fighting for the psychic, emotional and physical space for their children to truly be free.” That is the core of the African American experience.

By highlighting the beauty and richness and proud heritage of African Americans by wearing HBCU shirts and talking about their rich heritage, showcasing black art and music, having the whole family sit and watch Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have A Dream Speech” – all within the context of everyday life, The Cosby Show showed what it really meant to be a black family in America. They never had to yell, “We are black-ish!”

They were just a family whose pride of heritage was interwoven in everything they did. And they were fighting, as many of us are still fighting, to create a world where our children can be anything they want to be while always remembering who they are, where they come from and the unique bond that African Americans still share as we continue to struggle against being made out as the joke and minstrel of America; and who somehow, in spite of shows like Black-ish, find ways to maintain our dignity, honor our elders, show our children that they don’t have to take on and parody someone else’s heritage and readily give up their own religion, history and faith in an effort to gain ratings while betraying all that we are and have been as black people in America.

Katie Holmes Switches It Up In Edgy Little Black Dress At DuJour Magazine Event

Katie Holmes swapped her classically chic attire for an edgier look in New York on Tuesday.

While celebrating her DuJour magazine cover, Holmes hit the red carpet in a little black stretch-knit number, complete with slits along the bodice, by Azzedine Alaïa:

katie holmes

As DuJour’s fall cover star, Holmes opened up to the magazine about the acting “dry spell” she experienced during her five-year marriage to Tom Cruise.

“It’s the life of an actor. We don’t really have a lot of choice in the matter. You have dry spells, and then you have times when there is a lot of opportunity,” Holmes said.

Holmes, who made a big-screen comeback with “The Giver” in August, told the magazine that what really kept her from working was a desire to spend time with her daughter, Suri.

“I totally admire women who go back to work six weeks after giving birth,” she said. “But when she was little, I was not ready. I was a very nervous mother — like, sleeping next to her crib — and I was in that mode for a long time.”

Head over to DuJour for the full interview with Katie Holmes.

This ‘Orange Is The New Black’ Writer Divorced Her Husband For An Actress On The Show

Lauren Morelli recently filed for divorce from her husband of two years after penning Piper and Alex’s relationship helped her realize she’s a lesbian.

‘Orange Is The New Black’ Writer Divorces Her Husband, Starts Dating Poussey

In what is arguably the greatest love story of our time, or at least this week in particular, “Orange Is The New Black Writer” Lauren Morelli has broken up with her husband and since begun dating Poussey (Samira Wiley).

According to Morelli, it was writing scenes for Piper and Alex that gave her clarity on her own sexuality. “I found a mouthpiece for my own desires and a glimmer of what my future could look like,” she said (via TMZ).

TMZ goes on to report that the divorce has gone amicably following the couple’s two years of marriage, with Morelli keeping her Lexus and her ex-husband getting the Mazda hatchback, etc. Yet, as interesting as dividing up luxury vehicles and non-luxury vehicles may be the obvious point of this story is that Morelli is now in a relationship with Poussey and our hearts are just swelling with love right now and, hey, they look so good together in this Instagram:

Police Allegedly Mistake Black Actress Kissing White Partner For A Prostitute

“Django Unchained” star Daniele Watts claims she was unlawfully detained by police Thursday after they saw her kissing her white boyfriend in a car and allegedly mistook her for a prostitute.

In a Facebook post dated Sept. 11, Watts wrote that she was “handcuffed and detained” by two Studio City police officers in Los Angeles that day after refusing to show her ID.

Here’s how Watts describes the alleged incident on Facebook:

Today I was handcuffed and detained by 2 police officers from the Studio City Police Department after refusing to agree that I had done something wrong by showing affection, fully clothed, in a public place.

When the officer arrived, I was standing on the sidewalk by a tree. I was talking to my father on my cell phone. I knew that I had done nothing wrong, that I wasn’t harming anyone, so I walked away.

A few minutes later, I was still talking to my dad when 2 different police officers accosted me and forced me into handcuffs.

Watts, who plays Martin Lawrence’s daughter on the FX show “Partners” and has also appeared on “Weeds” and “How I Met Your Mother,” says the incident reminded her of her father’s experiences with racial profiling.

“As I was sitting in the back of the police car, I remembered the countless times my father came home frustrated or humiliated by the cops when he had done nothing wrong. I felt his shame, his anger, and my own feelings of frustration for existing in a world where I have allowed myself to believe that ‘authority figures’ could control my BEING… my ability to BE!!!!!!!” she wrote on Facebook.

Watts’ boyfriend, celebrity chef Brian James Lucas, shared a similar account of the incident. Lucas clarified with Buzzfeed, however, that the police never explicitly called Watts a prostitute. Instead, he said, the officers repeatedly questioned if Lucas “really knew” Watts and made other comments filled with “innuendo.”

In a Sept. 11 Facebook post, Lucas wrote: “From the questions that he asked me as D was already on her phone with her dad, I could tell that whoever called on us (including the officers), saw a tatted RAWKer white boy and a hot bootie shorted black girl and thought we were a HO (prostitute) & a TRICK (client).”

Watts was released from police custody shortly after being put in the back of the police car. It appears, however, that she did not leave unscathed. A photo on Lucas’ Facebook shows cuts on Watts’ skin allegedly left from the handcuffs.

Buzzfeed reports that the LAPD claimed not to have a record of the incident, which the police department said is not unusual in police encounters where no arrests are made.

Though Watts and Lucas were deeply affected by the incident, they both took the opportunity to show their resilience and optimism.

“Today I exist with courage, knowing that I am blessed to have experienced what I did today. All of those feelings, no matter how uncomfortable. These feelings are what builds my internal strength, my ability to grow through WHATEVER may happen to me,” Watts wrote on Facebook.

According to the celebrity news site The YBF, the couple is in contact with lawyers, the ACLU and the NAACP about the incident.

Beverly Johnson On Being A Black Fashion Icon And Seeing No Brown Faces On The Runway

Anyone can see the lack of diversity on fashion runways these days, but what does that feel like from the perspective of a black fashion icon?

Celebrated supermodel Beverly Johnson visited HuffPost Live on Thursday and discussed her reaction to the homogeneity of the modeling world today.

“We [in the fashion industry] live in this elitist bubble and we’re not aware of what’s happening in the world in the way of diversity.”

Johnson saw just how “out of touch” her industry has become at New York Fashion Week when she “went to a number of shows where there weren’t any women of color on the runway,” an experience which extended to the shows of black designers. When asked how she felt about it, Johnson’s answer was an easy one: “angry.”

She went on to describe yet another layer to the conversation, a flourishing number of black bodies and faces in the modeling world — all of which are however international and not black American.

“What’s wonderful is that we have this global community of women and men of color… it’s great to see representatives from the world… and then we have this total lack of African American models now.”

Check out Beverly Johnson’s HuffPost Live segment in the clip above.

Comedy Sketch Nails Media Portrayal Of Black Victims To The Wall

We’re not surprised that there’s a PR firm specializing in protecting the public images of black teens wrongly targeted by cops — we’re just surprised that it’s only in a satirical Funny Or Die sketch.

The firm promises that after a black teen’s all-too-likely experience with police brutality, the right photo ends up on the evening news.

“When you’re murdered by the police, there is a criminal investigation. But more important is the public investigation, when your whole life is boiled down to one photo. Let’s make sure it’s the one of you playing frisbee,” one of the pseudo PR people advises in the video, before the company’s office is raided by a SWAT team.

The media often casts a negative light on black victims, a trend brought to the forefront of national conversation after the Aug. 9 shooting of unarmed black teen Michael Brown by police officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri.

During coverage of the teen’s death, many outlets published a photo of an unsmiling Brown looming tall over the camera. The image sparked questions over whether a white victim would have been portrayed in such a way.

Maybe a real-life PR firm for young black victims isn’t such a bad idea. Or, you know, maybe the media could just exercise some restraint.

Roksanda Ilincic on Lipstick Love, Her Signature Red, and Her London Beauty Black Book

Roksanda Illincic

No matter the season, there is one constant you can count on at a Roksanda Ilincic show: When the Serbian-born, London-based designer takes her bow, it is with a signature slick of bright lipstick. “I’ve always gravitated toward it,” says Ilincic of a bold pop of color—which provides the same visceral impact on skin as it does spilling down the back of one of her architectural day frocks or painterly evening dresses. Not surprisingly, her new David Adjaye–designed boutique in Mayfair is also equipped with plenty of graphic flourishes. And while Ilincic admits to a promiscuous lipstick past—“I was into fuchsia pinks and bright oranges at some point”—she only has eyes for crimson these days. “It’s empowering,” she explains of a precisely applied scarlet pigment. “You put a red lipstick on and you feel stronger.” Ilincic depends on her trusty collection of shades, along with a few other beauty basics, to get through the rigorous demands of her nonstop Fashion Week schedule. Here, she divulges her favorite formulas, as well as her black book of London destinations that keep her going when the collections come to town.

When did you transition into a red-only existence, and why?
I guess ten years ago, I sort of settled on red, and it’s been a love affair ever since. It makes both a classic and a bold statement, and when you apply it, your skin glows so much more! It’s very important to get the right red, though.

How would you describe the specific red that works for you?
At the moment, I’m quite interested in Estée Lauder Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick in Impassioned and Envious, $ 30. One is more orange, and one is more red. I use both. Sometimes I change colors in spring or winter, or I’ll wear something more poppy and bright in the daytime and something more timeless and elegant at night. And I don’t like to wear much else with my lipstick except, of course, mascara—and a little foundation so it’s quite fresh and effortless. That’s what makes the look my signature, I guess.

As something of a lipstick expert at this point, do you have any good application tips?
During the day, I like to apply my lipstick as a stain, pressing it with a piece of tissue afterward, so it looks easier. But in the evening, I use an Estée Lauder lip pencil then apply one layer of lipstick, put a tissue on top, then add a little bit of dry powder so it lasts longer.

What else are you stuck on right now?
I love the French pharmacy and discovering new things there. Avène Cold Cream for face and body is one of my old favorites. I’m loyal, but I’m also quite open to experimentation—and taking advice from my facialist! I see Debbie Thomas in Knightsbridge. She’s excellent. I have very sensitive, delicate skin that doesn’t like changes, and my face also needs lots of sun protection, so Debbie recommended this Vichy SPF 50 cream just before the summer, and it worked out brilliantly! There’s also another Estée Lauder product that I love called Revitalizing Supreme Global Anti-Aging CC Creme SPF 10. It actually adapts to what kind of skin you have. I use it every day.

Are you as specific about your other makeup essentials as you are about your skin care?
I’m pretty particular about my mascara. I have long eyelashes, but I don’t want them to look clumpy so I want something that’s more natural, but keeps that polished look at the same time. I use MAC In Extreme Dimension 3D Black Lash. It’s quite lightweight. When I go to work, I usually just wear lipstick, but it’s a necessity to have mascara when you go out at night. I also have a neutral MAC blusher that I use not just on my cheekbones but also around my eyes to contour. I like to apply it with these lovely brushes that were done by my friend Liz Goldwyn when she collaborated with MAC. I always keep them in my makeup bag.

You’ve recently traded your signature dark brunette hair color for a lighter caramel shade.
I wanted to go back to a lighter phase in my life—to my teens when I didn’t have to dye my hair, and I had a natural honey color that went light in the summer and dark in the winter. My colorist, Tracy Hayes at Fudge, mixes so many different colors together to achieve it. I see her every month.

With the nonstop demands of London Fashion Week coming up, do you have any go-to products that help you look your best, even when you’re working on no sleep?
This perfectly explains the power of the red lip, actually. When you put on a bright lipstick, it takes the fatigue away. My second secret is backstage makeup artist Lucia Pica. On the day of the show, she performs this miracle and I get reborn with the makeup she does for the models.

Do you have any other indulgences—before or after the shows?
I’m really particular about the way I eat just before the shows. I stop eating meat and kind of try to avoid carbs as well—and I drink lots of water, coconut juice, and green juice. And I’m really into massage. I get one much more often than I get my nails done—pretty much anytime I have free time! It’s very excessive, but it’s one thing I can indulge in when times are crazy. I usually get deep tissue at the spa at the Corinthia Hotel. It’s the best massage in London. Very loud music keeps the spirit up as well.

What are you listening to these days?
I leave that to the guys in the studio—but it’s everything from R&B to hip-hop and classical. And I’m really excited about the comeback of Kate Bush. I was so obsessed with her when I was younger.

If memory serves, she was also something of a red lip lover . . .
Yes! She was! Maybe we can exchange tips sometime.
