Katie Holmes Switches It Up In Edgy Little Black Dress At DuJour Magazine Event

Katie Holmes swapped her classically chic attire for an edgier look in New York on Tuesday.

While celebrating her DuJour magazine cover, Holmes hit the red carpet in a little black stretch-knit number, complete with slits along the bodice, by Azzedine Alaïa:

katie holmes

As DuJour’s fall cover star, Holmes opened up to the magazine about the acting “dry spell” she experienced during her five-year marriage to Tom Cruise.

“It’s the life of an actor. We don’t really have a lot of choice in the matter. You have dry spells, and then you have times when there is a lot of opportunity,” Holmes said.

Holmes, who made a big-screen comeback with “The Giver” in August, told the magazine that what really kept her from working was a desire to spend time with her daughter, Suri.

“I totally admire women who go back to work six weeks after giving birth,” she said. “But when she was little, I was not ready. I was a very nervous mother — like, sleeping next to her crib — and I was in that mode for a long time.”

Head over to DuJour for the full interview with Katie Holmes.

This ‘Orange Is The New Black’ Writer Divorced Her Husband For An Actress On The Show

Lauren Morelli recently filed for divorce from her husband of two years after penning Piper and Alex’s relationship helped her realize she’s a lesbian.

‘Orange Is The New Black’ Writer Divorces Her Husband, Starts Dating Poussey

In what is arguably the greatest love story of our time, or at least this week in particular, “Orange Is The New Black Writer” Lauren Morelli has broken up with her husband and since begun dating Poussey (Samira Wiley).

According to Morelli, it was writing scenes for Piper and Alex that gave her clarity on her own sexuality. “I found a mouthpiece for my own desires and a glimmer of what my future could look like,” she said (via TMZ).

TMZ goes on to report that the divorce has gone amicably following the couple’s two years of marriage, with Morelli keeping her Lexus and her ex-husband getting the Mazda hatchback, etc. Yet, as interesting as dividing up luxury vehicles and non-luxury vehicles may be the obvious point of this story is that Morelli is now in a relationship with Poussey and our hearts are just swelling with love right now and, hey, they look so good together in this Instagram:

Police Allegedly Mistake Black Actress Kissing White Partner For A Prostitute

“Django Unchained” star Daniele Watts claims she was unlawfully detained by police Thursday after they saw her kissing her white boyfriend in a car and allegedly mistook her for a prostitute.

In a Facebook post dated Sept. 11, Watts wrote that she was “handcuffed and detained” by two Studio City police officers in Los Angeles that day after refusing to show her ID.

Here’s how Watts describes the alleged incident on Facebook:

Today I was handcuffed and detained by 2 police officers from the Studio City Police Department after refusing to agree that I had done something wrong by showing affection, fully clothed, in a public place.

When the officer arrived, I was standing on the sidewalk by a tree. I was talking to my father on my cell phone. I knew that I had done nothing wrong, that I wasn’t harming anyone, so I walked away.

A few minutes later, I was still talking to my dad when 2 different police officers accosted me and forced me into handcuffs.

Watts, who plays Martin Lawrence’s daughter on the FX show “Partners” and has also appeared on “Weeds” and “How I Met Your Mother,” says the incident reminded her of her father’s experiences with racial profiling.

“As I was sitting in the back of the police car, I remembered the countless times my father came home frustrated or humiliated by the cops when he had done nothing wrong. I felt his shame, his anger, and my own feelings of frustration for existing in a world where I have allowed myself to believe that ‘authority figures’ could control my BEING… my ability to BE!!!!!!!” she wrote on Facebook.

Watts’ boyfriend, celebrity chef Brian James Lucas, shared a similar account of the incident. Lucas clarified with Buzzfeed, however, that the police never explicitly called Watts a prostitute. Instead, he said, the officers repeatedly questioned if Lucas “really knew” Watts and made other comments filled with “innuendo.”

In a Sept. 11 Facebook post, Lucas wrote: “From the questions that he asked me as D was already on her phone with her dad, I could tell that whoever called on us (including the officers), saw a tatted RAWKer white boy and a hot bootie shorted black girl and thought we were a HO (prostitute) & a TRICK (client).”

Watts was released from police custody shortly after being put in the back of the police car. It appears, however, that she did not leave unscathed. A photo on Lucas’ Facebook shows cuts on Watts’ skin allegedly left from the handcuffs.

Buzzfeed reports that the LAPD claimed not to have a record of the incident, which the police department said is not unusual in police encounters where no arrests are made.

Though Watts and Lucas were deeply affected by the incident, they both took the opportunity to show their resilience and optimism.

“Today I exist with courage, knowing that I am blessed to have experienced what I did today. All of those feelings, no matter how uncomfortable. These feelings are what builds my internal strength, my ability to grow through WHATEVER may happen to me,” Watts wrote on Facebook.

According to the celebrity news site The YBF, the couple is in contact with lawyers, the ACLU and the NAACP about the incident.

Beverly Johnson On Being A Black Fashion Icon And Seeing No Brown Faces On The Runway

Anyone can see the lack of diversity on fashion runways these days, but what does that feel like from the perspective of a black fashion icon?

Celebrated supermodel Beverly Johnson visited HuffPost Live on Thursday and discussed her reaction to the homogeneity of the modeling world today.

“We [in the fashion industry] live in this elitist bubble and we’re not aware of what’s happening in the world in the way of diversity.”

Johnson saw just how “out of touch” her industry has become at New York Fashion Week when she “went to a number of shows where there weren’t any women of color on the runway,” an experience which extended to the shows of black designers. When asked how she felt about it, Johnson’s answer was an easy one: “angry.”

She went on to describe yet another layer to the conversation, a flourishing number of black bodies and faces in the modeling world — all of which are however international and not black American.

“What’s wonderful is that we have this global community of women and men of color… it’s great to see representatives from the world… and then we have this total lack of African American models now.”

Check out Beverly Johnson’s HuffPost Live segment in the clip above.

Comedy Sketch Nails Media Portrayal Of Black Victims To The Wall

We’re not surprised that there’s a PR firm specializing in protecting the public images of black teens wrongly targeted by cops — we’re just surprised that it’s only in a satirical Funny Or Die sketch.

The firm promises that after a black teen’s all-too-likely experience with police brutality, the right photo ends up on the evening news.

“When you’re murdered by the police, there is a criminal investigation. But more important is the public investigation, when your whole life is boiled down to one photo. Let’s make sure it’s the one of you playing frisbee,” one of the pseudo PR people advises in the video, before the company’s office is raided by a SWAT team.

The media often casts a negative light on black victims, a trend brought to the forefront of national conversation after the Aug. 9 shooting of unarmed black teen Michael Brown by police officer Darren Wilson in Ferguson, Missouri.

During coverage of the teen’s death, many outlets published a photo of an unsmiling Brown looming tall over the camera. The image sparked questions over whether a white victim would have been portrayed in such a way.

Maybe a real-life PR firm for young black victims isn’t such a bad idea. Or, you know, maybe the media could just exercise some restraint.

Roksanda Ilincic on Lipstick Love, Her Signature Red, and Her London Beauty Black Book

Roksanda Illincic

No matter the season, there is one constant you can count on at a Roksanda Ilincic show: When the Serbian-born, London-based designer takes her bow, it is with a signature slick of bright lipstick. “I’ve always gravitated toward it,” says Ilincic of a bold pop of color—which provides the same visceral impact on skin as it does spilling down the back of one of her architectural day frocks or painterly evening dresses. Not surprisingly, her new David Adjaye–designed boutique in Mayfair is also equipped with plenty of graphic flourishes. And while Ilincic admits to a promiscuous lipstick past—“I was into fuchsia pinks and bright oranges at some point”—she only has eyes for crimson these days. “It’s empowering,” she explains of a precisely applied scarlet pigment. “You put a red lipstick on and you feel stronger.” Ilincic depends on her trusty collection of shades, along with a few other beauty basics, to get through the rigorous demands of her nonstop Fashion Week schedule. Here, she divulges her favorite formulas, as well as her black book of London destinations that keep her going when the collections come to town.

When did you transition into a red-only existence, and why?
I guess ten years ago, I sort of settled on red, and it’s been a love affair ever since. It makes both a classic and a bold statement, and when you apply it, your skin glows so much more! It’s very important to get the right red, though.

How would you describe the specific red that works for you?
At the moment, I’m quite interested in Estée Lauder Pure Color Envy Sculpting Lipstick in Impassioned and Envious, $ 30. One is more orange, and one is more red. I use both. Sometimes I change colors in spring or winter, or I’ll wear something more poppy and bright in the daytime and something more timeless and elegant at night. And I don’t like to wear much else with my lipstick except, of course, mascara—and a little foundation so it’s quite fresh and effortless. That’s what makes the look my signature, I guess.

As something of a lipstick expert at this point, do you have any good application tips?
During the day, I like to apply my lipstick as a stain, pressing it with a piece of tissue afterward, so it looks easier. But in the evening, I use an Estée Lauder lip pencil then apply one layer of lipstick, put a tissue on top, then add a little bit of dry powder so it lasts longer.

What else are you stuck on right now?
I love the French pharmacy and discovering new things there. Avène Cold Cream for face and body is one of my old favorites. I’m loyal, but I’m also quite open to experimentation—and taking advice from my facialist! I see Debbie Thomas in Knightsbridge. She’s excellent. I have very sensitive, delicate skin that doesn’t like changes, and my face also needs lots of sun protection, so Debbie recommended this Vichy SPF 50 cream just before the summer, and it worked out brilliantly! There’s also another Estée Lauder product that I love called Revitalizing Supreme Global Anti-Aging CC Creme SPF 10. It actually adapts to what kind of skin you have. I use it every day.

Are you as specific about your other makeup essentials as you are about your skin care?
I’m pretty particular about my mascara. I have long eyelashes, but I don’t want them to look clumpy so I want something that’s more natural, but keeps that polished look at the same time. I use MAC In Extreme Dimension 3D Black Lash. It’s quite lightweight. When I go to work, I usually just wear lipstick, but it’s a necessity to have mascara when you go out at night. I also have a neutral MAC blusher that I use not just on my cheekbones but also around my eyes to contour. I like to apply it with these lovely brushes that were done by my friend Liz Goldwyn when she collaborated with MAC. I always keep them in my makeup bag.

You’ve recently traded your signature dark brunette hair color for a lighter caramel shade.
I wanted to go back to a lighter phase in my life—to my teens when I didn’t have to dye my hair, and I had a natural honey color that went light in the summer and dark in the winter. My colorist, Tracy Hayes at Fudge, mixes so many different colors together to achieve it. I see her every month.

With the nonstop demands of London Fashion Week coming up, do you have any go-to products that help you look your best, even when you’re working on no sleep?
This perfectly explains the power of the red lip, actually. When you put on a bright lipstick, it takes the fatigue away. My second secret is backstage makeup artist Lucia Pica. On the day of the show, she performs this miracle and I get reborn with the makeup she does for the models.

Do you have any other indulgences—before or after the shows?
I’m really particular about the way I eat just before the shows. I stop eating meat and kind of try to avoid carbs as well—and I drink lots of water, coconut juice, and green juice. And I’m really into massage. I get one much more often than I get my nails done—pretty much anytime I have free time! It’s very excessive, but it’s one thing I can indulge in when times are crazy. I usually get deep tissue at the spa at the Corinthia Hotel. It’s the best massage in London. Very loud music keeps the spirit up as well.

What are you listening to these days?
I leave that to the guys in the studio—but it’s everything from R&B to hip-hop and classical. And I’m really excited about the comeback of Kate Bush. I was so obsessed with her when I was younger.

If memory serves, she was also something of a red lip lover . . .
Yes! She was! Maybe we can exchange tips sometime.

LBDs seem to be a staple in Ms. Aniston’s closet, and rightfully so. Justin Theroux’s fiancee really knows how to rock the chic look.

Speaking of Theroux, he was on hand for the red carpet event, and posed with his love backstage.

Black TV Producer, Charles Belk, Arrested By Beverly Hills Cops Who Thought He Robbed A Bank

As the nation continues to grapple with police discrimination in America, a number of incidents are now surfacing more than ever thanks to the power of social media.

One recent encounter took place in Beverly Hills Friday, Aug. 22, during Emmy Award weekend between local authorities and television producer Charles Belk who said police arrested him as he was walking from a restaurant where they reportedly accused him of “armed bank robbery and accessory to robbery of a Citibank.”

Belk penned a post on Facebook describing the “life altering experience,” saying his only crime was fitting the description of a “tall, bald head, black male.”

WHEN YOU “FIT THE DESCRIPTION”!

It’s one of those things that you hear about, but never think it would happen to you.

On Friday afternoon, August 22nd around 5:20pm, while innocently walking by myself from a restaurant on Wilshire Blvd, to my car up LaCienega Blvd my freedom was taken from me by the Beverly Hills Police Department.

Within seconds, I was detained and told to sit on the curb of the very busy street, during rush hour traffic.

Within minutes, I was surrounded by 6 police cars, handcuffed very tightly, fully searched for weapons, and placed back on the curb.

Within an hour, I was transported to the Beverly Hills Police Headquarters, photographed, finger printed and put under a $ 100,000 bail and accused of armed bank robbery and accessory to robbery of a Citibank.

Within an evening, I was wrongly arrested, locked up, denied a phone call, denied explanation of charges against me, denied ever being read my rights, denied being able to speak to my lawyer for a lengthy time, and denied being told that my car had been impounded…..All because I was mis-indentified as the wrong “tall, bald head, black male,” … “fitting the description.”

I get that the Beverly Hills Police Department didn’t know at the time that I was a law abiding citizen of the community and that in my 51 years of existence, had never been handcuffed or arrested for any reason. All they saw, was someone fitting the description. Doesn’t matter if he’s a “Taye Diggs BLACK”, a “LL Cool J BLACK”, or “a Drake BLACK”

Beverly Hills Police Department sent The Huffington Post a statement regarding Belk’s arrest:

Beverly Hills Police on Friday arrested 47-year-old Brianna Clemons Kloutse of Los Angeles immediately following an armed robbery at a bank in the 8400 block of Wilshire Boulevard. Police believe that Kloutse is the “Purse Packing Bandit,” responsible for nine recent bank robberies and two attempted bank robberies in Los Angeles, West Hollywood and Beverly Hills. She will be arraigned today at the criminal court building in downtown Los Angeles.

Witnesses to the robbery said Kloutse was most likely working with a man who was distracting the other bank employees while the robbery was carried out. Within minutes of the robbery call being broadcast, police detained a subject less than a block away from the robbery who closely matched the clothing and physical characteristics of the male suspect. After an eye witness positively identified the subject in a field show-up, police arrested Charles Belk for suspicion of robbery. A follow-up investigation by detectives ultimately determined that Mr. Belk was not involved in the robbery and he was released from custody without charges.

The Beverly Hills Police Department deeply regrets the inconvenience to Mr. Belk and has reached out to him to express those regrets and further explain the circumstances. However, based on witness accounts, and his location close to the bank, officers properly detained and arrested him based on the totality of the circumstances known at the time of the field investigation.

The Police Department protocol requires that they go through the process of thoroughly verifying that Mr. Belk was not the suspect before releasing him. That process included taking witness statements, coordination with the FBI and Los Angeles Police detectives who were investigating the earlier bank robberies, and examination of the surveillance video from the bank. Police are still searching for the second suspect.

Read more of Charles Belk’s Facebook post on his arrest here.

Lorraine Toussaint Talks Shooting A Nude Scene After 50 For ‘Orange Is The New Black’

Lorraine Toussaint dared to go bare after turning 50 when she stripped down for a steamy scene in the second season of Netflix’s breakout hit “Orange Is The New Black.” But unlike just about every other TV fan, she had never actually seen the finished product — until she visited HuffPost Live.

Host Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani ran footage of the scene during Toussaint’s interview on Friday, and the actress revealed that it was the first time she’d ever seen it. Her response: “Oh dear.”

Even as a villain and protagonist to the show’s most beloved characters, Lorraine Toussaint shines as “Vee” in “OITNB’s” much-lauded second season. Though she had never watched the scene, Toussaint said she did check in with a close circle of intimate friends before she agreed to go topless.

“I had a couple of girlfriends and a couple of my gay guy friends take a look at the girls,” she said. “And I just went for it.”

Toussaint said she tried to think of “a million different ways to film this [scene] clothed” but “none of it made sense. This character would never have done that.” As for the response to the scene, Toussaint doesn’t want to be called ‘brave’ for appearing nude, and said the focus on her choice to bare it all later in life is a mark of the unhealthy cultural obsession with youth.

“It’s very American, isn’t it? Because in America, certainly in Hollywood, it’s about youth and it’s about the glorification of the young body, the firm body, the teenage, post-teenage, early-20s body,” she said. “It’s also about being stick thin. It doesn’t actually reflect the way women’s bodies actually look or how women’s bodies actually mature.”

See Lorraine Toussaint react to her “OITNB” nude scene in the clip above, and click here to check out the full HuffPost Live conversation.

How to Get Rid of Black Women With Kinky Hair

The trend of integration in the natural hair movement may contribute to the erasure of kinky hair textures in the media.

Cross-racial friendships, relationships and alliances are wonderful! For example, naturallycurly.com, which supports non-straight haired women of all races through product tips, testimonials and other articles, was one of the few hair blogs that interviewed me during my kickstarter campaign for my children’s book that honors afro-textured hair, Sunne’s Gift. Dozens of individual African-American natural hair bloggers (including Curly Nikki) either missed or ignored my repeated requests. Naturallycurly.com’s diverse readership truly supported Sunne’s Gift and its message of self-love and hair-acceptance. Suffice it to say that I am a grateful and avid naturallycurly.com fan.

On a personal level, I’m pleased that my curly-haired Eastern European friend, Tanya, and I can read naturallycurly.com together and chat about the featured hair products. Again, cross-racial friendships are beautiful!

But don’t get it twisted! Although Tanya and I both have hair that is not straight, our hair is different. To my knowledge, no white woman with Tanya’s curly hair texture has been fired in the past year for wearing an afro to work. To my knowledge, no white little girls with Tanya’s hair texture have been expelled from school for having locks or puffy hair. White girls with Tanya’s hair texture are not systematically put in chairs at the tender ages of five, four or sometimes two or three so that toxic chemicals found in Drano and Nair can be placed on their hair. (That process is also called a relaxer.)

2014-07-14-Reason42.jpg

2014-07-14-Reason9.jpg

Additionally, the U.S. Army did not effectively ban Tanya’s hair by banning afros above two inches, dreadlocks, twists and multiple braids of a certain width.

2014-07-14-20140411armyphotothumb.jpg

Nope, those things did not happen to white women with Tanya’s curly hair, but they sure did happen to black women and girls with my kinky hair. I love Tanya dearly and I respect her hair story. But our hair stories diverge.

For these reasons, I agree with Ebony editor Jamilah Lemieux’s assertion that black women with kinky hair need safe spaces which exclusively tell our stories. In these safe spaces we can vigorously promote our own beauty, share our deepest fears big chopping, discuss the lures of weaves and creamy crack, express our disappointment if the men in our lives tell us that they preferred us with Brazilian hair weaves, and mobilize ourselves to make sure that kinky haired women and girls’ rights are respected.

Curly Nikki’s stated mission is hair therapy — not hair therapy for only black women. I completely agree with Nikki Walton that she has every right to create a diverse and inclusive platform. But black women also have every right to create and support exclusive ones.

When there are only cross-cultural hair coalitions, there is a tendency to seek a middle ground. Therefore, middle of the road curly textures may be celebrated and kinkier textures may be marginalized. When I chopped off my sisterlocks at the beginning of the year, I had a warped expectation of what my loose hair would look like. The pervasive celebration of curliness on natural hair blogs made me think that my hair could go back and forth from kinky to curly by simply applying pomades. Six months and six curl custards later, my hair has never known a curl. I saw my cousin with curly hair and thought that a seventh curl cream would do the trick. Later I learned that she had used a chemical texturizer. The curl hegemony has black women being oppressed by the natural hair movement that aimed to liberate them.

Moreover, while the talk of new custards, conditioners and twist-out techniques continued unabated, the natural hair movement was unable to garner the 100,000 signatures needed to challenge the U.S. army’s effective ban of black hair a few months ago. In the words of Niyya Tenee, the founder of Locs Revolution, “What good is a movement if we can’t move people to protect their own interest?”

2014-07-14-20140626NiyyaTennethumb.jpg

The apolitical curl hegemony makes me fear that one day the natural hair movement will be synonymous with curly hair and kinky hair textures will be completely eliminated. It would not be the first time that black women of darker skin tones and kinkier hair textures have slowly witnessed their erasure in media by people who claimed to be champions of diversity.

Oil of Olay’s 2012 Olympics commercial discussed the fact that “our nations and our skin” make us different, but the ad does not have any brown or deep-hued women. Despite the many dark-skinned women Olympic athletes from the United States, South Asia, Africa and Caribbean, Saatchi and Saatchi thought that they had done a phenomenal job representing skin diversity by presenting skin that ranged from pale white to light yellow.

Similarly, Pharrell said that his album, Girl, was about challenging the notion that women have to be white and waif thin to be beautiful. But instead of challenging it by placing women who look like singer Ledisi, Lupita Nyongo, Nina Davuluri and Liris Crosse on his cover, he came up with this album cover with thin to slim women ranging from pale white to light tan.

2014-07-14-pharrellgirlcover.jpg

In this climate of faux diversity, it’s not shocking that dark-hued women such as Nina Simone, Harriet Tubman and the non-mixed Igbo protagonist of Half of a Yellow Sun are being represented by light-skinned and mixed race actresses Zoe Saldana, Jacqueline Flemming and Thandie Newton, respectively. Controversial novelist Kola Boof has warned of this trend of replacing darker-hued women with lighter-hued women in Hollywood for years. This erasure seems almost inevitable in an era in which “one-drop” is made synonymous with blackness, curly is conflated with kinky, substitution is masked as support, and colonization parades as cooperation.

The media erasure of darker hues and kinky textures has real life consequences. A study in the book Click: The Magic of Instant Connections, revealed that just casually seeing a person, without even consciously knowing that you have seen that person, makes that person more attractive and more likable. Darker skinned and kinky-haired women may risk being perceived as less attractive and less likable in real-life as result of their lack of “being seen” in the media.

Do not misinterpret me. I love and fully support fair-skinned and or mixed race black women, curly-haired women, straight-haired women and all people. My children’s book that honors afro-textured hair, Sunne’s Gift, is not just about hair. It is about loving and celebrating one another because of our differences, not in spite of them. That said, we need media that represents everyone. There is no shortage of diverse stories to be told. The question should not be whether cross-racial hair blogs like curlynikki.com and Naturallycurly.com should exist. They should exist and they deserve our support. But beware. If black women fail to ALSO support more black-orientated blogs that cater to kinky hair while promoting the true meaning of the natural hair movement by defending black women’s right to avoid chemical hair processes, such as afrostateofmind.com and blacknaps.org, among others, kinky-haired black women may wind up supporting our own erasure.

Added Wiley on his Twitter account:

According to The Independent, Wiley also tweeted that the list was the “saddest in music history.” (A scan of Wiley’s Twitter account, however, didn’t turn up that tweet.)

Responding to the controversy, a spokesperson for the BBC said that 1Xtra’s list was not about race. “Artists were considered on variables such as sales statistics, quality of music and impact across the wider industry,” the spokesperson told The Independent, “it is not about the color of someone’s skin.”

Back on Twitter on Monday, July 14, Wiley noted that it wasn’t Sheeran’s race that made him so upset, but the idea that Sheeran was an influencer on urban music.

The DOPE x Liquipel x Starter Snapback in Black

When I am in the market to buy a new hat, I like it to be simple and easy to wear. Most of the time when I am hat shopping I look for one in black. Every now and then something colorful may appear in my hand, but it’s mainly to add contrast to all the primarily black caps I own. What I’ve noticed more and more is that companies are starting to work with waterproof technology so that their hats stay dry and fresh at all times. Waterproof gear like, hats, wallets, etc. are in high demand. The company that has been killing it with their waterproofing technology is Liquipel.

Dope and Starter are teaming up with Liquipel to provide consumers with an awesome hat. The collab will feature Dope’s logo on the front of a black snapback, and on the back it will show the starter label on the mid section.

Dope Couture owner Matte Fields had this to say about the collaboration.

JR: What brought you and starter brand together? Why starter, when there are so many other hat brands?

MF: Starter is one of the originals. When snapbacks regained popularity in the early 2000′s most people were buying deadstock Starter hats from the 90′s. In our first boutique, most of our hats were either DOPE or Starter.

JR: Why a hat collab? Why not a jersey, shirt, sweater, or jacket?

MF: There was no question when we linked up with Starter that we would do a hat. The Starter snapback means a lot to streetwear, it was an easy choice.

JR: Why do you like the new Liquipel technology?

MF: Liquipel is normally used on electronics and the reasoning is evident. People drop their phones in water, they spill things on their devices. With clothing it is a little less clear why you would want Liquipel. We sent a couple test hats to some touring artists to get initial feedback on the hat, and we got some really great responses. These guys who are normally going through hats every few shows from sweating and the abuse of touring were telling us how they were able to rock the DOPE x Liquipel x Starter snapback show after show. Liquipel made it the perfect hat for touring, skating, just getting it this summer.

JR: Will Dope be doing more collabs with starter and Liquipel?

MF: We have something lined up for Summer 14, check our blog (http://dope.com/blog) for updates.

JR: Would you like to say anything else about the collab that hasn’t been said?

MF: We have put a lot of focus on the technology and the collab with Starter, but I also just think this design is ill. It is minimally branded and works with everything. People need a hat like that.

Click on the link to view how Liquipel Technology works when the collaborated hat is hit with champagne!

‘Orange Is The New Black’ Season 2 Review: The Rage Under The Entertaining Surface

There are few things more tiresome than a work of alleged entertainment that relentlessly flogs a political or social agenda at the expense of its creative goals.

But the converse of this is true as well, at least for me: Whether or not I agree with the agenda in question, I have nothing but respect and admiration for a work that wraps up its social and political views in such an entertaining, well-made package that, as I fall further under the spell of the piece, I can’t help but consider the arguments it makes.

Consider, for example, the anger that radiates from the center of “Orange Is the New Black.”

It’s billed as a comedy for certain awards purposes and it’s a deft mixture of comedy, drama and melodrama, but the underlying anger was especially apparent in “OITNB’s” tremendously satisfying second season. One thing the show is not is saccharine or unduly sentimental. I discussed Season 2 with critics Ryan McGee and Tom Fitzgerald from TomandLorenzo.com in this week’s Talking TV podcast, and all three of us were struck by how realistic and even clinical the show is regarding why these women are behind bars.

Sure, the game was rigged against some of the women, and for them, a few bad choices ended more disastrously than they would have for someone more privileged and connected. But “OITNB” is also very clear-eyed about the fact that some of the women simply enjoyed breaking the rules and/or weren’t overly burdened with consciences, and it’s clear that “OITNB” has no issue with society’s right to curb on their freedom, at least temporarily. As we discussed on the podcast, though the show has deep compassion for almost all of its characters, its philosophy cannot be summed up as, “Hug a prisoner because every one of them is a misunderstood victim.” Not by a long shot.

And yet the second season repeatedly, almost relentlessly, asked the audience to think about what goes on behind closed doors and what happens when secrets are kept too well. Out of sight is out of mind, when it comes to those under lock and key, but “OITNB” is clearly not OK with the lack of transparency and accountability at prisons like Litchfield, and it’s certainly not OK with how low we as a society can go in our treatment of those who have transgressed. (From here on out, I’ll be talking about “OITNB” Season 2 specifics.)

So often, “OITNB” is angry — furious at the fact that an ailing old woman can be dumped on the streets without a care plan or resources, aghast at the fact that it’s not unusual for prisoners to lack clean and safe living conditions, upset at the idea that those charged with the maintenance of inmates can steal from them and have their crimes quickly hushed up. Yes, all those situations were fictional on the show, but it’s certainly not hard to believe that similar things happen in real life. As “The Wire” did, “OITNB” repeatedly puts ugly situations in front of us and says, in so many words, “Are you OK with this? Are we all OK with this?”

That said, “The Wire” didn’t have Pornstache.

That’s probably just as well — McNulty would have found a justifiable reason to beat up Pornstache within 10 minutes of meeting him — but there’s a reason that “OITNB” became a hot commodity right out of the gate and it took a while for “The Wire’s” genius to be recognized. “OITNB” gives us candy, so much delicious candy. Pornstache may not have been to your taste — used as judiciously as he was in Season 2, I found him ridiculous in all the right ways — but if he wasn’t your cup of entertaining tea, something else in this richly detailed universe would likely allow you to fall under the show’s spell.

Even more than “The Wire” — a very complex and deep deconstruction of that old TV standby, the cop show — “OITNB” has found ways to make its animating fury extraordinarily palatable and attractive. This isn’t me pitting “The Wire” against “OITNB,” by the way. They’re both terrific shows, and as excellent as it is, it’s too soon to tell whether “OITNB” is an all-time great like “The Wire.” But both shows solved a knotty problem in similar ways. How do you get people to pay attention to people and issues they’d much rather ignore? How do you rage against the machine and get people to stick with your story? The formula that worked like gangbusters for both programs: You work within recognizable forms (cop show, prison drama), you create indelible characters and you entertain the hell out of the audience.

Perhaps due to Jenji Kohan’s background in comedy, “OITNB” was able to make its central themes about exclusion, deprivation, loneliness and brutal power dynamics go down very easily indeed. I suppose you could watch Season 2 without necessarily sensing a deeper agenda — a lot of “Sopranos” fans watched the show for the whackings, after all — but I would submit that even the most superficial fan felt the rage that percolated through the scene in which Jimmy, a prisoner with dementia, was taken away to be dumped on the streets. It was one of the season’s most heartbreaking moments, and it was meant to be searing. Despite most characters’ silence in that moment, you could feel a righteous anger radiating off the screen, and throughout Season 2 — despite all the soapy twists and turns and power struggles and romances — “OITNB” didn’t forget about Jimmy and the issues her fate raised. Sister Ingalls may have wanted to turn away from everything troubling inside Litchfield, and she, like everyone else, was annoyed by Brooke Soso’s crunchy-granola babbling, but Brooke wasn’t wrong. The conditions at the prison mattered, Jimmy mattered, and Sister Ingalls couldn’t hide from that deeply inaccurate phrase: “compassionate release.”

One of the many intelligent choices creator Jenji Kohan has made is employing familiar tropes and structures that absolutely makes each set of episodes feel like a season of television, despite the fact that the show “airs” on Netflix. This year, we got a Big Bad (the sociopath Vee), a star-crossed romance and a (partly) secret pregnancy (Daya and Bennett), several mysteries and cliffhangers, and a grand set piece — the storm episode — that united several story threads near the end of the season. Throughout the season, new characters were introduced to the show’s already fascinating array, previous characters were developed even further, and smartly constructed dynamic tensions drove almost every relationship. The tragic exclusion of Poussey nearly broke my heart and the Vee-Red power struggle was all kinds of enjoyable. Even Pennsatucky and Healy’s weird bond had its moments.

I’m hard pressed to name another show with a deeper bench of complicated, believable characters. Every one of them has deep flaws, every one of them was awful at one point or another. Healy in particular reaffirmed his status as a piece of work; he could seem almost enlightened one minute but could slide right into rage the next. But just as Healy, Sister Ingalls, Yoga Jones and Caputo found their backbones late in the season, the show doesn’t let its cynical leanings or its commitment to its own brand of realism destroy its core moral beliefs. So many characters had so much taken away from them this season. Piper ended up with no real family, inside or outside, and though Vee’s reign of terror eventually ended, the sight of a sobbing Suzanne is something I won’t soon forget.

These moments of loss, sadness and anger drove the urgent questions that percolated through so many stories: How much should be taken away from those who have transgressed? What constitutes just punishment? How do you define family, and what is the purpose of a family? What secrets are worth keeping — socially and personally — and what hidden things need to be dragged out into the light, no matter the cost? Who gets to have power and why do some people get more passes than others? What obligations do the powerful have to the powerless? What rights do the least among us have?

These are the questions that animate “OITNB”; these are the serious conundrums that give the show its drive, momentum and energy. But along with anger and compassion, there is a third quality that gives the show its heft and staying power — curiosity. “OITNB” is endlessly interested in who these women are and what they are capable of. Ryan, Tom and I talked about how long we think the show should run, and here’s when I think it should end: When Kohan and her writers are no longer deeply curious about the people they’re depicting, no longer entertained and pained by their mistakes, and no longer moved by their momentary acts of kindness. I can only assume that day is far in the future.

All right, to wrap this up, here are a few of my favorite quotes from the second season of “Orange Is the New Black” and a couple other bits and pieces:

  • Piper: “Do not defend your boner to me right now.”
  • Morello: “You don’t go Jessica Simpson when you’ve got Rihanna.”
  • Sister Ingalls’ nun friend: “I can’t believe it. I fell in with the bad nuns.”
  • Polly’s husband: “I’m not an alcoholic. I’m Australian.”
  • Healy: “It’s the lesbians who started this whole thing.”
  • Nicky: “I’m like Icarus whose wings melted before he could f*** the sun.”
  • Taystee: “She will go Wolverine on your ass.”
  • Sister Ingalls: “There was this statute of Jesus that was especially ripped. That was my guy.”
  • Black Cindy: “The bathrooms may be segregated, but the market be free.”
  • Yoga Jones: “They always win, one way or another.”
  • Nicky: “You’re one Cheerio in the bulk box of life.”
  • Things/people I want more of in Season 3: Sophia, Poussey, Taystee, Black Cindy, Yoga Jones, Suzanne, Flaca, Nicky, Big Boo and the Golden Girls.
  • Things/people I want less of in Season 3: Figueroa (and I’m assuming she’s gone from the show), Larry, Polly, Piper’s family. I don’t necessarily mind all the family stuff (aside from Larry, who is dead weight at this point), but as we discussed, by the end of the season, I didn’t think it was all that additive to the show’s world.
  • One thing I’m a little nervous about: If Piper and Alex are in the same prison next season, will their relationship — whatever its status — eat up a lot of the show’s focus? Perhaps too much? I worry a bit, despite liking both characters and actors. But the show hasn’t gotten the big stuff wrong for two seasons now, so I’ll reserve judgment until I see Season 3.
  • I’d sure love more time with Miss Rosa, but I think we’ve seen the last of her. But hot damn, that final scene was great. What a way to go.
  • One final, fun thing: Ryan and I are adding to a Spotify playlist based on the final scene of Season 2. The idea is this: What song would you want blasting on the car stereo as you busted out of prison? Email us or hit Ryan or me on Twitter if you have a song you want added to the Rosa’s Runaway playlist.

The Missing Education on Black Hair

“Why does she wear an afro?” “Why is her hair styled that way?”

These questions spur a conversation about Afro-textured hair that should be occurring. The lack of this conversation has resulted in discriminatory events, for example, this past week Tiffany Bryan, a 27-year-old cancer survivor from New York, was fired from her job for wearing an Afro. This event is not the first: Within the last 12 months soldiers in the military, grade school students, university students and hard-working members of society have been discriminated against because of their hairstyle. These women wore their hair in Afros, twist, dreadlocks and braids not because of some hair fad, but because these styles are essential for their texture of hair. Each of these events, created by a lack of fundamental knowledge on Black hair, offers an opportunity for us to talk openly about the hair of women of color. If the people that committed these acts of discrimination understood that the morphological differences of Afro-textured hair requires a different type of hair care and hairstyles than other ethnic groups, future events of discrimination can be avoided.

Afro-Textured Hair Is Curly Hair

There are five classifications of Afro-textured hair, all of which are variations of curly hair. These classifications range from a looser curl texture to a tightly curly or coily texture. While the biochemical composition of Afro-textured hair is identical to that of Caucasians and Asians, it is its morphological difference in elasticity and comb-ability that causes Afro-textured hair to have different needs. This curly disposition leaves the hair more susceptible to breakage. Styling tools such as combs and brushes, for example, force the curls to elongate, but the curls naturally resist, resulting in breakage. Delicate care is thus needed to preserve hair growth and avoid hair damage.

The curliness of Afro-textured hair also causes it to have less moisture content than other ethnic groups. Every ethnic group’s scalp naturally produces a lubricant called sebum, which is an oily substance that moisturizes and protects the hair follicle. Water is the second source of moisture that all ethnic groups need to moisturize their hair. Both sebum and water travel down the hair shaft to lubricate the hair, but when these two elements are not able to travel all the way down the hair shaft or absorb into the hair strand, it leads to dry hair. The shape of curly hair, especially tightly curly hair, does not create a straight path for sebum and water to travel all the way down the hair shaft — this is why afro textured hair looses moisture quickly after washing. Dry hair, or hair without moisture, reduces hair pliability and makes it even more difficult to manipulate the hair without breakage, which is one of the reasons that moisture retention is very important for healthy Afro-textured hair.

Afro-textured hair, furthermore, does not benefit from daily washing. When hair is washed everyday it is stripped of its natural essential oils, which leads to dryness and weathering of the hair fiber. People with Afro-textured hair already have naturally dry hair so washing the hair frequently only increases this dryness and leads to damage.

Hair Care and Styling that Promotes Health

“Why won’t they just keep their hair straight?”

As explained Afro-textured hair is naturally curly, and there are only two options to keep the hair straight, chemical straightening or heat straightening, both of which severely damage the hair fiber. Chemical straightening, also referred to as relaxers, physically and chemically changes the hair fiber. It damages the hair cuticles by opening up the hair shaft, which makes the hair strand very vulnerable to damage. It also causes damage to the scalp, and since the chemicals in relaxers are said to be toxic there are other health problems associated with its use. Heat straightening with blow dryers and flat irons also damage the hair by harming the hair cuticles and leads to the same problems as a chemical straightener. Keeping Afro-textured hair straight can be unhealthy for the hair, and in the case of a chemical straightener can also be unhealthy for the body. Straightening the hair is a choice not a requirement.

Due to the fact that Afro-textured hair is more susceptible to breakage, and cannot easily be straightened without damaging the hair, individuals of color have to wear hairstyles that promote healthy hair, such as dreadlocks, twist, braids, updos, etc. These styles are also referred to as protective hairstyles, because these hairstyles can be worn for longer periods without constant manipulation of the hair. This is one of reasons why the U.S. military’s ban on solders and personnel wearing dreadlocks, braids or twisted hairstyles is unhealthy and discriminatory. Without these styling options, the only options available to them are chemical or heat straighteners that can damage their hair. In addition, the ease of these protective hairstyles allow these women to focus on being a soldier and not worry about straightening their hair.

When Afro-textured hair is washed and not styled, it naturally forms into the coiffe that is known as the Afro. Thus, when Vanessa Van Dyke and Tiffany Bryan wear an Afro, they are wearing their hair the way it naturally grows from their head. Or when grade school students, such as those at Deborah Brown Community School, Tulsa Okla., and Horizon Science Academy, Lorain Ohio wear their hair in Afro puffs they are simply taking their natural Afros and styling them just like little girls who wear pigtails or ponytails. Should pigtails and ponytails be banned too? Of course the answer is no, because we are taking away hairstyles that are widely accepted and healthy for the hair.

In the last decade, women of color have increasingly chosen to wear their natural curly hair over straightened hair. This has resulted in YouTube channels, blogs and other online outlets dedicated to teaching women how to care for their hair. The hair industry has also shifted, there are now more products specifically marketed and geared to women who wear natural hair. The media and print, furthermore, now advertise more women with natural hair because of its widespread acceptance.

Hopefully, understanding these fundamentals about Afro-textured hair will help the U.S. military, schools and employers acknowledge that natural Black hair has a morphological difference that requires different needs than other ethnic groups, and in order to maintain the health of Afro-textured hair it needs to wear hairstyles that promote health.

19 Things We Learned From The ‘Orange Is The New Black’ Cast

The second season of “Orange Is the New Black” premiered weeks ago, and some of us are even in our second round of bingeing the season, but we still can’t get enough.

HuffPost TV spent a day with the cast of the Netflix series at the Crosby Street Hotel in New York City, asking them about everything from Season 2 that we possible could. We learned about everything from characters reveals and what to expect in Season 3 to how they feel about important topics in the LGBT community. Read on to find out all the things the cast shared with us:

(Spoiler alert if you haven’t finished Season 2 of “Orange Is the New Black.”)

1. There will be a big Alex and Piper sex scene in Season 3.

piper alex

When talking about how comfortable she and Taylor Schilling are together when filming sex scenes, Laura Prepon teased an upcoming sex scene in Season 3. “Season 3, oh man. We’re on episode three and it is, like, so good,” Prepon said. “We have a big scene coming up on Monday and it’s going to be great. We’re both so comfortable.”

2. Samira Wiley and Danielle Brooks prefer Poussey and Taystee as friends.

While talking about Poussey and Taystee’s relationship in Season 2, Samira Wiley said, “I think selfishly, Samira’s own thing, I like them better as friends.” Danielle Brooks chimed in about the kiss scene saying, “At first I was like, ‘This is a little awkward,’ because we’ve known each other for a while.” The two said it might have been hard for the characters to return to a friendship if things went further. “When you bring sex into it, I don’t think it would’ve been the same,” Brooks said.

“At what point does it just become, like, I’m playing a person?”

3. Lorraine Toussaint has no idea about Vee’s fate.

After a very long pause following the question of whether or not Vee is dead — it was a long pause tingling with anticipation — Lorraine Toussaint simply said, “I don’t know.” We think she really doesn’t have any clue since she added, “That’s an interesting question I meant to ask before this [interview].”

4. Matt McGorry hurt himself multiple times when filming Season 2.

bennett

McGorry said that when filming the scene where Bennett flips out in the ghetto dorm, “I threw out my shoulder twice. I have bad shoulders anyway.” On that same day of shooting he also hurt himself again. “The scene in the cafeteria where I slam my hand on the table,” McGorry said, “we did enough takes that it was, like, my fingers were swollen.” The poor guy is falling apart on and off screen.

5. Bennett will likely also show his temper again in Season 3.

Talking about the physical strain the show has had on him, McGorry said, “My voice is screwed up from shooting Season 3 the other day, too.” When asked if he was yelling some more, he got really secretive, only responding, “Maybe.”

“I think we need to ask what we could do to make the lives of trans people better in this country.”

6. Selenis Leyva has a very personal connection to Laverne Cox and her role in the trans community.

“I have a transgender sister,” Leyva, the actress who plays Gloria on the show, said. “When I met Laverne I immediately flocked to her and watched her very closely because I knew that this was going to be groundbreaking. I knew that she was going to give a voice to the voiceless.” Leyva began tearing up when talking about her sister, sharing how grateful she is that Cox has given her sister a voice. “Your sister’s always had a voice, it’s just about amplifying that,” Cox chimed in. “Her sister’s lovely, I’ve met her a couple of times,” she added.

7. Uzo Aduba was originally only supposed to play Crazy Eyes for two episodes.

crazy eyes

“When I first got the job I was only supposed to do two episodes, possibly a third and a chance of there being a fourth,” Aduba said of her Suzanne, a.k.a. Crazy Eyes. On her last day shooting her second episode of Season 1, a producer told Aduba that they were going to use her in the show more. “I sincerely thought they meant I was gonna get to do the third episode,” she said of her reaction. “I was like, ‘Yes! This is amazing. I’m gonna call my mom, I nailed it!’ No idea that we were going to continue on then for the rest of the season.”

8. The cast pays for Netflix, just like us.

“Shouldn’t we just get it for free, maybe?” Laverne Cox joked. “They take it out of my bank account every month,” she said laughing.

9. Laura Prepon has some serious die-hard fans.

When asked about the crazy amount of fandom Prepon has received since Season 1 premiered, the actress shared how she’s been sent a whole variety of hand-made gifts. “I’m a huge poker player [and] one fan made me poker chips with my name and [Alex's] glasses on them.” While she said she’s flattered by the gifts (she even knows her fans’ names and where they live), Jason Biggs couldn’t stop saying how creepy he thinks it is. “Have you checked them for Anthrax?” he joked. “I think I’m jealous. I’m not used to having fans, I’m used to having haters.”

10. Laverne Cox wants people to know that her success doesn’t mean the trans community isn’t still in danger.

laverne

Talking about her big year since Season 1 premiered, Cox said,”I still feel like that trans woman
walking down the street wondering if someone’s going to call me a man today, if someone’s going to call me a he-she, and actually that still happens. The reality of my life as a trans woman of color is that my life is often in danger simply for being who I am.” Although she said she’s grateful for all the love and support she has gotten, she doesn’t want people to forget about the struggled of the trans community as a whole. “My TIME cover, or one trans woman having a successful moment, should not make us feel that the lives of trans people are still not in peril. I think we need to remember that and ask what we could do to make the lives of trans people better in this country.”

“I was laughing so hard I didn’t know if I’d be able to get through it.”

11. Taryn Manning thinks Tucky’s changes are stemming for a desire for power.

The actress said Pennsatucky’s changes in Season 2 are due less to a possible romantic interest in women, and more to the appeal of power. “She obviously loves men because she’s in there for seven abortions, so she’s familiar with the penis,” Manning said to much laughter. “She’s lost and there’s someone like, ‘Hey, we can be powerful together.’ It’s run by that more. She might be being brainwashed, not quite sure.”

12. Jason Biggs isn’t sure if Larry is actually in love with Polly.

“I do feel like they have some interesting chemistry,” Biggs said of the new relationship between Larry and Polly in Season 2. He said he’s curious about how the two interacted before the show’s timeline and whether or not they were flirty before Peter came along. When asked flat out if it was love, Biggs said, “I don’t know. I think he might think he’s in love with her. He’s really out of sorts and hurt and trying to put up this wall to protect himself.”

13. If Nicky and Lorna continue their relationship, it’ll have to get serious.

lorna nicky

“They’re past casual sex now after that stairwell scene,” Lyonne said of their relationship in Season 2. “If they’re going to continue a romantic relationship, at the end of each time they fuck they’re going to have to say, “I love you” whether they like it or not.”

14. Lorraine Toussaint may be scary as Vee, but she throws dinner parties in real life.

While talking about working with Toussaint on set, Uzo Aduba said, “It’s remarkable to watch her be Vee and then go to her house for dinner because she’s invited everyone over and she’s cooked for, like, six hours. You’re just like, ‘You are annoying how awesome you are!’”

15. Natasha Lyonna wishes the media would stop categorizing “gay” shows and characters.

When asked about how she thinks perceptions of LGBT storylines have changed over the years since her film “But I’m a Cheerleader,” Natasha Lyonne said, “It hurts my soul that so many years after that movie we’re still commenting on it.” She went on to say, “It’s important that everybody has a voice, but it does break my heart a bit that that many years later it’s still about, ‘Oh this is a gay show, or this is a gay relationship, or you play a gay character.’ At what point does it just become, like, I’m playing a person?”

16. Red originally wasn’t supposed to have as heavy of an accent.

red oitnb

Kate Mulgrew said that when she first auditioned for Red, there was only a small description of the character. “It was a tiny page and it said at the top, ‘Just a hint of a Russian accent. She’s been in America since she was 2,’” Mulgrew said. “That’s not at all what came into my mind. [In Red’s Russian accent] A real peasant came into my mind.”

“They’re going to have to say, “I love you” whether they like it or not.”

17. Both Uzo Aduba and Danielle Brooks were amazed by the actors who played their younger characters.

Aduba said she met the girl who played the young Crazy Eyes and was blown away by how calming the 12-year-old girl was. “To watch her was just magnificent. I couldn’t believe how much she had borrowed — she didn’t even know she was doing character work.” Although Brooks wasn’t on set with the girl who played the young Taystee, she said how flattered she was to watch her performance. ” I didn’t help her with it at all, she takes all the credit.”

18. Laverne Cox could hardly make it through the vagina anatomy scene.

The one with the visual aid — I’ve never shot anything where I was laughing so hard I didn’t know if I’d be able to get through it,” Cox said. “Adrienne, who plays Black Cindy, was brilliant and funny, Joel [Garland who plays C.O. Scott] in the back was hilarious, and Lea DeLaria was off camera doing what Lea does.” The actress and activist said that the scene was also reflective of real trans women. “Laverne would never go into all this detail about her body, but I know trans women who are very proud of their hoohahs and want to dispense useful information about them.”

19. Matt McGorry doesn’t like when you sneak photos of him on the train.

“I like when people ask me [for a photo], but when people are taking photos on the train and sneaking their phone, I’ll turn away,” McGorry said. “It makes me uncomfortable because I don’t know how many they’re taking, or what the purpose is.” For Dasha Polanco on the other hand, who plays Daya, the new fandom she’s gotten from the show has made her more self-conscious. “I would wake up and go downstairs in sweatpants,” she said. “Now I gotta get myself together and then go outside. But I embrace it.”

Will Laura Prepon Be Back In ‘Orange Is The New Black’ Season 3?

Once Laura Prepon was in “Black,” she had to go back.

Prepon revealed in a recent interview with Us Weekly that her character, fan favorite Alex Vause, will be back as a series regular in Season 3 of “Orange is the New Black,” appearing in all episodes.

Prepon blamed her schedule for the lack of Alex and her trademark specs in Season 2. Vause appeared in only four episodes in the most recent season and was originally supposed to appear in only one, according to Uproxx.

“I was so bummed out. But I handled it, so I’m in every [episode] in Season 3. It is so good,” says Prepon.

How Vause will reappear in the series is still a mystery as her character is no longer at Litchfield, but the news is still cause for celebration.
